For vegan food in Sarajevo, go to Veganer, a plant-based fast food place, or The Singing Nettle, a Bosnian restaurant that marks its vegan dishes on the menu. For falafel and hummus, try Falafel Restaurant. Karuzo, a vegetarian restaurant, is close to The Singing Nettle.

Sarajevo is famous for grilled meat, but you can eat well here without it. Below: where each place is, what to order, when it opens, and the words to look for on a Bosnian menu.

What is Veganer?

Veganer is a plant-based fast food place at Čobanija 1. Everything on its menu is vegan. Its own website calls it "Sarajevo's first plant-based street-food spot".

The menu has burgers made from legumes, wraps, soups and snacks, made fresh every day. Veganer's website names a creamy laksa soup as one of its signature dishes, and there are desserts too.

Falafel Restaurant at Đulagina čikma 2 is the place for falafel. Its menu lists what goes into each dish, so you can check before you order.

Going by those ingredients, these have no meat, dairy or egg:

  • Humus: chickpeas and tahini, with a green pepper and olive oil dressing
  • Falafel wrap: falafel, mixed salad, and tahini sauce with turmeric and chilli, in a tortilla
  • Fatuš salad: eight kinds of vegetables, sumac, pomegranate sauce, lemon, olive oil and crispy tortilla pieces
